Cabo de Palos: lighthouse, fishing village & the most beautiful snorkeling spots of Murcia

At the southern tip of the Costa Cálida, where the sea becomes rougher and the horizon extends further than your eyes can follow, lies Cabo de Palos. A charming fishing village with an iconic lighthouse, a lively harbor and arguably the best snorkeling spots in Spain.

For us, Cabo de Palos is one of those places where you keep coming back. Whether you like hiking, snorkeling, good food or just strolling around by the water – everything comes together here.

Cabo de Palos feels different from the rest of the region. More authentic. Calmer. More connected to the sea. No endless rows of apartments here, but rocky bays, clear water and an underwater world that you can just explore with your snorkel.

The atmosphere in the village is relaxed, with fishing boats in the harbor, terraces with fresh fish, and a lighthouse that watches over everything. By the way, the lighthouse has been through more than you might think: the current building dates from 1864 (under Queen Isabella II), but a predecessor on the neighboring island of Isla Hormiga was completely destroyed in a heavy storm in 1869 – the lighthouse keeper then saw his wife and three children swept away by the waves. Since then, no one has lived there. The current light is visible up to 14.8 km away, and has been warning ships for more than 150 years about the dangerous shallow rocks here – not without reason: in 1906, the Italian ocean liner Sirio sank just off the coast, causing many casualties.

In the summer it can get a bit busier – especially during the weekends – but it is still charming.

Cabo de Palos borders the Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, officially protected area since 1995 and today one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in Europe. Without trawl fishing, the seabed could fully recover here: vast posidonia seagrass beds, gorgonian corals, and even giant groupers that are now accustomed to divers. On clear days, the visibility under water is up to 30 meters.

Our recommendations:

• Cala Fría (at the lighthouse) – easy to reach, often few waves
• Cala Túnez – intimate atmosphere and colorful marine life
• Playa de Levante – long sandy beach with beach bar (in summer), perfect for families with children
• Cala Reona (towards Calblanque) – a rugged bay with a footpath and good underwater visibility. (Also one of our favorites from our list of 11 favorite beaches.)

Go snorkeling early in the morning for the clearest water, and don’t forget your own snorkeling mask .

If you like hiking, Cabo de Palos is a real gem. Start your walk at the iconic lighthouse, where you can usually park easily. The road to it alone is beautiful, but be sure to go to the foot of the lighthouse for an impressive view of the coastline.

From there you follow the footpath towards the harbor. You pass rugged rocks, mini bays and viewpoints where you can stop to enjoy the view or take a dip. The path winds along the water – with a different piece of coast that surprises you every time.

In the harbor you can take a break on a cozy terrace, or just enjoy the lively view of the fishing boats. Afterwards, return via Playa de Levante, a long and wide sandy beach with a relaxed atmosphere. In the summer you will find beach bars where you can have a drink with your feet in the sand.

This walk is perfect to do with children, and especially in the late afternoon it is wonderful here – softer light, a little less warm, and a sunset as the icing on the cake. Put on hiking shoes for the rocky part near the lighthouse.

After a morning of snorkeling or hiking, the terraces of the harbor beckon. Here you can taste fresh fish as it should be. Our favorite addresses:

• Miramar – highly recommended. The prawns in aioli and chirlas are delicious.
• La Tana – charming and cozy, nice to discover.
• Pescadería 5 Islas – buy fresh fish and grill it at home or in your holiday home.

Do you like rice dishes? Then be sure to try the typical arroz caldero – the local specialty.

During the summer months, Cabo de Palos comes alive. There is a pleasant hustle and bustle on the beach, in the restaurants and on the market. Out of season it is just a bit quieter – and at least as beautiful. For those who like to go out: you will find a few bars and lounge terraces in the village, although Cabo de Palos is mainly about sea, nature and relaxation.

Cabo de Palos is one such place where you feel connected to the sea. Whether you come to snorkel, hike or just eat a plate of fish with a view of the harbor – you are guaranteed to leave with a smile.
