The best markets around Murcia, Cartagena & Costa Cálida

We don’t live here permanently, but have been coming back for years – enough to know which market is worth it, and which one is better skipped. Every day of the week has its own market somewhere in this region: stalls full of local vegetables, clothes that you won’t find anywhere else, and that typical buzz that we never get enough of. Here are our favorites.

The most spacious market of the six, with clothing, accessories and enough local products to fill your bag. Combine it with an afternoon at the salt lakes further down the road – that contrast, from a busy market to the silence of the plains, instantly makes it one of our favourite Mondays.

Everything from fresh fruit to clothing, at a pace that never feels rushed. Exactly the atmosphere in which we like to get lost for an hour without a plan.

This is Cartagena’s real weekly outdoor market – not to be confused with the covered Mercado de Santa Florentina (Calle Juan Fernandez), which is open every day, Monday to Saturday, 8am-2.30pm. Looking for the latter for your food shopping? Then combine with our guide to Cartagena in 1 day.

A mix of locals and visitors who have been bumping into each other here for years. Afterwards, take a stroll into the centre, or sit down for a drink – the market itself only lasts one morning, the atmosphere lingers for the rest of the day.

The least known of the six, and therefore one of our favorites. Local producers, competitive prices, and enough space to walk through it quietly even with children.

The place to be on Sunday. Handmade stuff, and afterwards a paella at the harbor – that’s all you really need on such a day.

In July and August, the atmosphere shifts to the evening, with markets really taking off after sunset.

If we have to choose: the night markets of Santiago de la Ribera and Torre de la Horadada win for us, purely because of the atmosphere. But the Sunday market of Cabo de Palos is and remains a classic – especially in combination with that paella at the harbor afterwards.

Bring enough cash, because not every stall accepts a card. And don’t forget to let a market be the starting point of your day: first browse around, then a beach or a walk in nature.
