Cartagena is without a doubt one of the most impressive cities in the Murcia region. A city where Roman ruins simply pop up between colorful facades and cozy shopping streets, and where you can walk straight into the harbor for tapas or a boat trip after a morning full of history.

We’ll take you along our favorite spots in Cartagena, in an order that’s easy to follow in a single day.

From the local market to Roman ruins, the best view of the city, and finally the Mediterranean Sea. This is how we would plan one day in Cartagena.

Start your day at the Mercado de Santa Florentina, Cartagena’s central fresh market. It’s a great place to pop in, especially in the morning: fish and seafood, fruit and vegetables, cold meats, cheeses, and other local products are all on display here.

It might not be the most famous sight in Cartagena, but that’s exactly why we think it’s a great first stop. You get an immediate glimpse of daily life in the city before diving into Roman history.

Tip: go here in the morning. The market closes early and most of the activity happens before lunch.

From the market, walk towards Cerro del Molinete, one of the most important archaeological areas in Cartagena.

Here, in the Museo Foro Romano, you’ll discover how large and impressive Roman Carthago Nova once was. You’ll walk past remains of Roman baths, streets, and buildings that lay hidden beneath the modern city for centuries.

What we find particularly special here is that you start to realize just how much history is literally lying beneath Cartagena.

Next, walk further through the center to Cartagena’s archaeological showstopper: the Teatro Romano.

The theater dates back to Roman times but was only rediscovered in 1988. For centuries, a large part of it lay hidden beneath later buildings.

Through the museum, you walk through different layers of history, as it were, until you finally reach the theater itself. And that moment remains impressive: suddenly you’re standing in the middle of a giant Roman theater, with the modern city right around it.

After all that Roman history, it’s time to see Cartagena from a completely different perspective.

Head towards the Castillo de la Concepción, at the top of one of the city’s hills. If you don’t feel like a steep climb, you can use the panoramic lift.

At the top, a beautiful view of Cartagena awaits: the harbor on one side, the rooftops of the old city on the other, and traces of the past everywhere in between.

For us, this is one of the best places to realize just how special Cartagena’s location actually is.

After the market, the Roman Forum, Teatro Romano, and the view, you’ve covered quite a bit of Cartagena on foot. The perfect time for a long Spanish lunch.

Around Calle Mayor, Plaza San Francisco, and the surrounding streets, you’ll find plenty of tapas bars, cafes, and restaurants. We wouldn’t try to rush through lunch here. Order a few dishes, find a spot on a terrace, and enjoy the Spanish rhythm.

And if you see asiático on the menu: try it. This typical coffee from the Cartagena region is made with coffee, condensed milk, Licor 43, and brandy. Not exactly your standard cappuccino.

After lunch, you don’t have to be anywhere at all.

Take a leisurely stroll through Calle Mayor and the surrounding streets and be sure to look up. Cartagena is full of beautiful modernist facades, balconies, bay windows, and colorful details that you can easily miss if you’re just rushing from sight to sight.

Also walk past the impressive Palacio Consistorial, Cartagena’s city hall, near the Teatro Romano.

We would deliberately keep this part of the day a bit more flexible. No checklist, just getting lost, getting an ice cream, popping into a shop, or having another coffee somewhere.

From the old city, you’ll naturally walk towards the boulevard and the harbor. Cartagena has been connected to the sea for centuries, and it’s only from the water that you really see how sheltered the natural harbor is.

You can simply walk along the boulevard, but if you have enough time, we think a boat trip through the harbor is a great addition to your day.

From the water, you’ll sail past the fortifications around the harbor and get a completely different perspective on Cartagena and the surrounding coast.

After the boat trip, you don’t really need any more major sights on your schedule. And that’s exactly why we deliberately save this part for the end.

Walk along the harbor, settle down on a terrace, or dive back into the old city one last time. Towards evening, the atmosphere changes and the terraces come to life even more.
