Sometimes you come to places where you think: why doesn’t everyone know this? That’s how it feels in Valle de Ricote – an oasis of greenery between rugged hills and old villages where time seems to stand still. While the rest of Murcia often looks arid and warm, this valley surprises with its palm trees, citrus fields and charming villages such as Ricote, Ulea, Blanca, Ojós and Abarán – all along the winding river Segura.

The valley of Ricote is not only beautiful to see, it also breathes history. In the Middle Ages, this region was the last Moorish enclave in Spain. For those who love hiking, Valle de Ricote is a true paradise. Put on sturdy walking shoes and try one of our favorite routes:

• Ruta del Valle de Ricote – a varied route of about 9 km along old irrigation canals, olive groves and citrus trees. For example, depart from Ulea or Ojós.
• Blanca to el Azud de Ojós – a peaceful walk along the Segura with beautiful views. Along the way, you will pass waterfalls and old watermills.
• Sendero del Solvente (Abarán) – a little more spicy, but the views are worth it. You walk along rocky outcrops and see the valley all the way from above.
• Explore Ricote on your own – this quaint hilltop village offers steep streets, Moorish influences, and breathtaking views of the valley. Climb to the ermita or simply wander around among the whitewashed cottages.

• Ricote is the most famous village in the valley, and rightly so: the atmosphere, the views, the mix of cultures – it feels like walking through a movie set.
• Blanca is livelier, with a cozy village square, a theater, and the gateway to many hiking trails.
• Ojós and Ulea are small but atmospheric – perfect for wandering around and settling down on a terrace.
• In Abarán you will find the largest concentration of norias (old Moorish water wheels) in Europe – very nice to visit with children.

Whether you like quiet villages, green valleys or walks with a view: Valle de Ricote has it all. It’s one of those places where you travel slowly, enjoy the little things, and are always amazed at how few people know about this region.
