The Floración of Cieza: a sea of blossoms in the heart of Murcia

If you think that the region of Murcia is only arid and dry – think again. Every March, the rural town of Cieza transforms into a magical fairy tale of blossoms. Hundreds of hectares of fruit trees are in bloom: a sea of pink, white and soft purple, as far as you can see. A natural phenomenon that you must have seen at least once in your life.

The Floración of Cieza is the name for the annual blossom period of peach, apricot and nectarine trees in the valley of the Río Segura. The combination of mountains, river and blossoms makes it one of the most beautiful places in Spain in spring.

You can discover this spectacle by car, but it is even more fun to do one of the marked walking or cycling routes. The region is then at its most beautiful – it feels a bit like walking through a painting.

The blossoms usually appear from the end of February to mid-March, peaking in the first two weeks of March. The exact time depends on the weather, so if you’re coming specifically for flowering, it’s best to check the calendar on the official website. You will also find information about guided walks, bike tours, markets, gastronomy events and even blossom flights with a paramotor for the more daring.

Various routes have been mapped out, ranging from short walks to longer cycling and car routes. Our recommendation: Ruta de El Horno – one of the most popular blossom routes, with views over the river, mountains and blossoming orchards.

You leave from the parking lots on the outskirts of the town, and then head into the blossoms at your leisure. We took our time, sat on a picnic bench among the pink landscape, and just enjoyed the moment. Bring water, sunscreen, and possibly something to eat – there are few amenities along the way.

Every corner is worth a photo: people walking among the blossoms, children trying to catch flowers in the wind, and a soft light that makes everything fairytale-like. Do you want really beautiful photos? Then go in the morning or just before sunset.

Combine your walk with a visit to the town of Cieza itself. The historic center is charming, with cozy squares, terraces and a few fine bakeries and cafes. Definitely do: a coffee or tapa at Plaza de España, near the church. Or drive a little further and visit the viewpoint at Mirador de la Presa de La Parra, where you look over the Segura River.

The Floración of Cieza is much more than a walk among trees – it is an experience that touches you. The smell, the view, the feeling of spring starting… it does something to you.
