Moratalla: lavender fields & breathtaking walks in the green north of Murcia

In the far north of the Murcia region lies Moratalla: a charming mountain village hidden between rugged mountains, rolling valleys and – in July – fragrant purple lavender fields. It is one of those places where you still have the feeling that you are really experiencing Spain. No tourist crowds, but winding roads, picnic benches with panoramic views and the scent of lavender hanging over the hills in the summer heat.

Moratalla is one of the greenest regions of Murcia, with a landscape that reminds you more of northern Spain. Due to its location in the mountains, it is often just a bit cooler than on the coast – certainly welcome in the warm summer months. In July, the valleys turn purple with lavender, which not only produces wonderful scents, but also beautiful pictures.

We immediately fell in love with this part of Murcia. It feels like time is ticking more slowly: you walk among the lavender, stop for a chat with a local farmer and have lunch on a bench with a view over the valley.

The lavender is in bloom from the end of June to mid-July. The most beautiful fields are located just outside Moratalla, towards the hamlet of Campo de San Juan – together with the hamlets of El Sabinar and Zaén, sometimes called the “Provence of Murcia”.

Search on Google Maps for “Lavanda de Moratalla” and you will automatically be guided to the right place. You can park your car nearby, after that it is a short walk. Please note: these are partly private property. Always respect the demarcation and stay on the paths.

Our tip:

This walk is a hidden gem. Think of a winding path through a deep ancient gorge, along the banks of the river Alhárabe, with jagged rock walls and cooling shade from ancient trees. The gorge is also part of an officially protected Natura 2000 area.

It is a route that appeals to both children and adults, and above all: one that you will not soon forget.

Via this link you will find the right walking route. Take carretera de Moratalla a Calasparra RM-715. At kilometre marker 18 you will see a sign on the left with “Paraje Bolvonegro”. Turn off there and follow the dirt road for about 1 km. You will then see an information board where the walking path officially begins.

There is a small parking zone near the start. From there you can go straight into nature.

Food always tastes better in nature – especially with a view. Our favorite break spots:

• Área Recreativa El Albergue: shade, picnic tables and play area.
• Mirador de Los Buitres: breathtaking view, bring your binoculars.
• Along the riverbed: spontaneous places to have lunch or paddle.

If you do go into the mountains, combine Moratalla with a few other places nearby. This is how you turn your lavender day into a little road trip in the interior of Murcia:

• Calasparra: known for its chapel in the rocks, atmospheric walking routes along the water and rice fields. Quiet, spiritual place.
• Caravaca de la Cruz: historic town with an impressive castle, cozy streets and nice squares to eat something.

These places are a short drive away and will make your day complete.
